Maine Road Trip Day 4

It has taken all these years of marriage, working (both of us), children growing up and now we have the time to take a long road trip like this one.  We have seen all but a couple of lighthouses that we planned to see.  On our way home, we will visit covered bridges in Maine.  This has been a lot of driving and a few hikes to see a particular light.  Most have been easy access.  But I am glad to have this checked off our bucket list. I can see why many fly here, rent a car, and drive around.  We love having our top down and taking the back roads.  We really like taking it slow.  We drive through towns and don't stop, if the rain is coming down.  We stay longer if we find something we want to savor.  So, for us, this is our kind of trip.   

Today, Friday, was a beautiful one.  We waited out the rain from last evening, and boy am I glad he wanted to wait.  With the sun out, I saw my favorite light so far.  First, we left Rockford, where we stayed overnight in the Tradewinds Inn.  We went by their lighthouse, not on Clyde's list of ten.  When we got there, it was a long walk to it and since we wanted to get in a full day, we got back in the car and drove on.

So, my favorite!!  Number 7, Marshall Point Light in Port CLYDE!!!  It wasn't that it was huge.  It was just the perfect setting.  Easy to get there, easy to walk out to see it, sit on the huge boulders and watch the surf hit the rocks.  The sun was out, the gift shop/small museum was sweet and on Oct. 10, 1993, is where Forrest Gump was filmed.  Tom Hanks ran to Marshall Point Light, stopped and turned around. Loved it.

Number 8, Owls Head in Rockland.  The unpaved, big ruts, muddy road to get to it about did me in.  The walk up a LOT of steps to see it, but the view up there was nice.  A small gift shop.  

We had lunch at a bakery in Rockland and the white bean and sausage soup with the best bread, hit the spot.  Drove on to Camden, very neat town, lots of shops, then on to Belfast, where we are staying tonight.  Went to a couple of beaches, one in Lincolnville and one in Belfast, looking for seagrass.  Found some pieces but nothing tumbled or pretty in color.

We are a long way from our family, and that always is cause for concern.  But God.  Thankful Clyde is well (he has been having blood pressure issues) and we are able to see all that God has created.

Maine Lighthouse Trip Day 3

 Today is Thursday and we knew weather was about to change.  Thankfully, this morning rain held off long enough for a couple of lights on our list.  This afternoon rain came, so we pulled in for the day early.  We stopped at a mom & pop place for a late lunch.  If I ever thought we rode through the backroads of Kentucky, nothing like the ones we have traveled in the last few days.  We have not been on the interstate since arriving to Maine.  All side roads and many of them, from town to town to town.....

Clyde has been so impressed with the way the yards/houses have been mowed/kept.  He said today "it's like they all knew the Bakers were coming to visit, so they mowed their grass"!  Uhhhh, I'm sure that's it.  NOT.  The houses along the coast are HUGE.  The ones off the water, for the most part very clean.  

The  large cone shaped white to light green to pink Hydrangeas that form trees not bushes, are all in full bloom here.  Everywhere.  It's like lights at Christmas, we keep saying "ahhhh and ooohhhh".  So pretty!  

Today we saw number five and six lights.  Five was in Arrowsic, ME (Bath, ME) and named Doubling Point Light.  It was built in 1898, and in 2002 the walkway and foundation was restored so that today it's as strong and beautiful as it was in 1898! It was quite a surprise.  The road to travel to visit it was about 3/4 mile of gravel and very narrow.  The internet didn't mention that when others said it was one of their "go to".  It was very unique.  We liked it.  But the road wasn't great.  It was very remote I would say! 

Number six, Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, in Bristol, ME.  With it beginning to rain, we didn't stay long to visit this one.  But it was beautiful and a place for outside picnics a bathroom break, and a very nice, new restaurant right next door (today, Sept. 9 was it's first day to serve guests).

Maine Lighthouse Trip Day 2

 September 8, 2021

Last night we stayed at a nice motel, downtown Ogunquit (that name means "Beautiful place by the sea").  It was Studio East, good price and very clean, handy as well.  We drove out to Perkins Cove, a wonderful area, such beautiful houses, shops were unique and we took a ride out to sea on a working lobster boat.  

                       

It was the cutest place and I love the water, boats and big houses.  Then we headed on down the coast to the second lighthouse on our list.  It was in Cape Elizabeth, name of it is Portland Head Light.  The one out in the water, barely visible from shore, is Ram Island Ledge Light.

The Third one on our list, Bug Light in South Portland.  Just happened to be a car show going on today there, so it was a great spot to stop.  

Number four on our list, in South Portland, the name is Spring Point, where you walk out to it on large stones as the path to it.  Also on this beach, were small pieces of sea glass.  Some weren't fully tumbled and not as pretty as the pieces in Jensen, but I picked it up anyway!

The weather was perfect today, rain on the radar for tomorrow.  So we tried to pack it in today.  A pretty great day.  Now to shut it down and get some rest.  Prayers.
